After performing a set at Rolling Stone’s Rock Room SXSW showcase, the members of the New York City indie band Hospitality explained why they are so excited to play a string of dates with Wild Flag in the coming months. “I respect Wild Flag as musicians, they have such a long career,” says frontwoman Amber Papini. “I was a big fan of Helium in high school,” bassist Brian Betancourt says of Wild Flag guitarist Mary Timony’s first band. “I recently found a cover that I did of ‘Pat’s Trick,’ which was their big single, and it’s incredibly embarrassing.”

    1. Rolling Stone: So what else do you have in store? Are you thinking about making another Wild Flag album?
    2. Carrie Brownstein: Yeah, we have two new songs, and we're going to continue writing. I really don't like free time, so if it was up to me, Wild Flag would put out an album in the fall. I'll just keep going on this hamster wheel that I'm on. [Laughs]

  5. #9 Wild Flag, ‘Wild Flag’

The indie-rock guitar record of the year is by Nineties survivors who were bulldozing basement shows back when today’s new bands were still in their Thomas the Tank Engine phase. Wild Flag’s debut is a beautifully bare-knuckled set of 21st-century post-punk by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss, Helium singer-guitarist Mary Timony and the Minders’ Rebecca Cole. The guitars spark, snarl and tangle, while the girl-group la-la-la’s cushion tougher sentiments. “Listen to the music, before it passes you by,” instructs Timony. No chance of that happening to these guys – they’re just revving up.
